			CINP Activities Report 2013-14
			Garth Huber, Executive Director

1) SWG Review
The 5 year review of the Scientific Working Groups, as required by the CINP
bylaws, is nearly completed.
- elections were held for new Chair in the Nuclear Structure and Nuclear
  Education SWGs.
- a new Chair was acclaimed in Nuclear Astrophysics SWG.
- previous Chairs were renewed for a second term in Beyond the Standard Model
  and Hadrons/QCD SWGs.
- thus, there are 3 new and 2 previous Chairs, which provides a good balance
  between continuity and new ideas.
- these Chairs, along with the Executive Director, will form the CINP Brief
Writing Committee for the LRPC to begin next year.
- the final stage of the SWG Review, to approve the new Terms of Reference of
each SWG is not yet completed. It has been proposed to change the name of
the Beyond the Standard Model SWG to the Fundamental Symmetries SWG, and this
change will be discussed at the CAP Congress.

2) Membership
Membership is up slightly from last year.
Since May 1, 2013 there are 11 new members: 3 faculty and 8 associate.
In addition, 3 previous associate memberships were not renewed, making for a
net increase of 8 memberships over the year.
The Board also recently agreed to move 6 retired faculty from institutional
members to associate status: 2 TRIUMF, 3 Manitoba, 1 Regina.
There are at present 107 individual members: 66 faculty and 41 associate.

3) Conference Support
There has been a lot of interest in conference support from the CINP in the
last year. 5 conferences were approved for funding:
- Nuclear Structure 2014
- r-Canada Workshop 2014
- CUPC 2014 (silver level sponsor)
- International Conference on Hard and Electromagnetic Probes of High-Energy
  Nuclear Collisions 2015
- Symposium on Symmetries in Subatomic Physics 2015
One conference request was denied (Testing Gravity workshop 2015) as the
linkage to nuclear physics was deemed weak. The conference organizers might
submit a revised application.

4) CINP Undergraduate Research Scholarships
For 2014 the CINP has decided to implement an undergraduate summer research
program. $20,900 in NSERC funds were allocated to this program, which replaces
the CINP Graduate Scholarship (for a similar amount) that was implemented last
year.
- the scholarships were evaluated by a commitee consisting of Board Members
Blunden and Barrette and non-Board member Chris Ruiz (TRIUMF).
- 11 scholarships were received, of which the committee decided 7 were
fundable. The top 5 were then selected for funding. 3 of them were approved
  for travel support.
There was some discussion: general support for the program, but there were some
questions and concerns on how the funds are distributed directly to the
undergraduate student. The travel supplement will be paid as a travel claim.

5) WNPPC and CUPC Student Travel Awards
The CINP continued its practice of previous years to give $500 awards to
encourage students to speak on nuclear physics topics at these conferences.
For the WNPPC 6 awards were given, and for the CUPC 5 awards were given.
- in the coming year, the Board will look carefully at the CINP budget before
deciding how many student travel awards to offer to these conferences.

6) Agency Meetings
- the CINP has been accepted as an observer at NuPECC. Board member Kanungo
attended the October 2013 meeting in Krakow and gave a short presentation on
  behalf of the CINP.
- ACOT. The CINP is a community representative at ACOT and attended two
meetings at TRIUMF in the last year.
- NSERC Large Projects Day. The CINP is asked to make an in camera
presentation to the SAPES each February.
- Ottawa Meetings.
  - June 20/13: GH, William Trischuk (IPP) and Malcolm Butler (LRPC) met with
NSERC leadership to discuss reallocation and the international discovery
    grant review.
  - Feb 10/14: GH and new IPP Director Mike Roney met with new NSERC VP of
Grants and Scholarships, Pierre Charest, to introduce him to our community
    and press for improved funding.
  - June 13/14: GH and Roney have a series of meetings scheduled to discuss
improved co-ordination between NSERC and CFI and funding for subatomic
    physics.
    - first meet briefly with Pierre Charest (NSERC)
    - longer meeting with Gilles Patry, President & CEO, CFI
    - afternoon meeting with Robert Dunlop, Assistant Deputy Minister for
      Science & Innovation, Industry Canada
- GH also consulted with intermediate-energy researchers and suggested names to
replace Paul Reimer as an intermediate energy expert on SAPES. We plan to
suggest names also in future years, to replace specific NP expertise.
