			CINP Activities Report 2014-5
			Garth Huber, Executive Director

1) Membership
Membership is up slightly from last year.
Since May 1, 2014 there are 12 new members: 4 faculty and 8 associate.
In addition, 4 previous associate memberships were not renewed, making for a
net increase of 8 memberships over the year.
There are at present 115 individual members: 69 faculty and 46 associate.

The CINP welcomed The University of Winnipeg as a new Institutional
Member.

2) Conference Support
There has been sustained interest in conference support from the CINP in the
last year. 4 conferences were approved for funding:
- CUPC 2014 (silver level sponsor)
- International Conference on Hard and Electromagnetic Probes of High-Energy
  Nuclear Collisions 2015
- Symposium on Symmetries in Subatomic Physics 2015
- Direct Reactions with Exotic Beams 2016

3) CINP Undergraduate Research Scholarships
For 2015 the CINP had a second competition for undergraduate summer research
scholarships. Since our NSERC MRS grant request was not yet decided at the
time of this decision, the Board agreed that if the NSERC budget turns out to
be tight, the Institute's internal funds could be used to partly support the
costs of the program this one time, if necessary.

As announced in the recent newsletter, the scholarships were evaluated by a
commitee consisting of 2 Board Members (Barrette and Gwinner) and non-Board
member Adam Garnsworthy (TRIUMF).
- 13 scholarships were received, which is an increase of 2 from last year,
despite more stringent application criteria. Namely, this year a supervisor
could only nominate a single student, while there was no such restriction
  last year.
- of these, the committee decided 10 were worthy students who could make good
use of a scholarship. The top 5 were then selected for funding, of which the
top 3 were unanimous selections. 4 of them were approved for travel support.

4) WNPPC and CUPC Student Travel Awards
The CINP continued its practice of previous years to give $500 awards to
encourage students to speak on nuclear physics topics at these conferences.
As announced in the CINP newsletters, selection committees were struck to
select the recipients, and 4 awards were given for each conference.

5) CINP Website
- some improvements have been made to the website in terms of content and
organization. A student has been contracted part-time to help Zisis
  Papandreou with upcoming improvements, including:
  - enhanced presence of SWGs on website
  - private members area for CINP Brief submissions and other information not
    intended to be publicly-available

6) Representation and Input to Various Agencies
- CINP was also asked by Compute Canada to give input on High Performance
Computing needs. A joint IPP+CINP committee was struck to write a paper,
which was submitted to Compute Canada on July 31.
- the CINP remains an observer at NuPECC. Board member Jens Dilling attended
the October 2014 meeting in Edinburgh and gave a short presentation on behalf
  of the CINP.
- NSERC asked CINP to provide input on numerous occasions in the last year:
  - CINP and IPP was asked to jointly prepare a document on the Context of
Subatomic Physics research at Canadian universities and presented this
document at the SAPES fall policy meeting on November 6. This document
cannot possibly replace the information SAPES received in their former
site-visits. Nonetheless, SAPES found the document to be extremely useful
and we expect this will now be an annual request.
  - CINP was asked to give feedback on the terms of reference for the upcoming
SAP LRPC. We were also asked to suggest members for the committee, and to
comment on a preliminary membership list for the committee.
  - CINP was also asked to give feedback on NSERC's implementation on the
Conflict of Interest policy and how it affects SAPES decision-making.
NSERC seemed very appreciative of the information we provided.
- NSERC Large Projects Day. The CINP made an in-camera presentation to
  SAPES on March 8.
- preparations underway for CINP Brief consultations for NSERC SAP LRPC.
- CINP is a community representative at ACOT and GH attended two
meetings at TRIUMF in the last year.
- In December, CINP wrote letters in support of the TRIUMF CAPTURE proposal to
the PMO, Minister of Finance, Minister of Industry, Secretary of State for
  S&T.
- Ottawa Meetings.
  - June 13/14: GH and IPP Director Mike Roney had a series of meetings
to discuss improved co-ordination between NSERC and CFI and funding for
    subatomic physics.
    - first meet briefly with Pierre Charest (NSERC)
    - longer meeting with Gilles Patry, President & CEO, CFI
    - afternoon meeting with Robert Dunlop, Assistant Deputy Minister for
      Science & Innovation, Industry Canada
  - March 9/15: GH and Roney had a second set of meetings following large
    projects day.
    - met with Elizabeth Boston and Sarah Overington (NSERC) re. the LRPC, and
the upcoming Discovery Grant reallocation exercise.
    - met with Pierre Charest (NSERC) re. increased funding for Discovery
Grants, conflict of interest regulations for SAPES, etc.
    - met with Lawrence Hanson, incoming ADM for Science & Innovation,
re. funding issues, coordination of granting agency decision making,
      TRIUMF CAPTURE.
    - Guy Levesque, CFI, re. SAP LRPC, future of MSI program, invitation to
      speak at CAP.
