CINP Annual Members AGM
June 16, 2015

Notes by Zisis Papandreou

1. Garth presents report
- fire alarm chewed up 20 min

2. Jason Donev on Nuclear Science Week (Oct 19-23, 2015)
- it is a non-for-profit outreach (nuclear pro-education) activity
- it highlights nuclear science (rather than nuclear power)
- take "cool things nuclear" concepts to a pub or library
- resources will be provided: ready-to- talk (powerpoint 30min will be provided)
- a poster will be designed (professionally) by middle of August
- contact Jason by end of August and let him know if you will be doing this locally
- CINP & DNP will email their members

3. SAPES: is CINP considering bridging positions?
- Jens: bridged people have to be NSERC eligible otherwise person can't build
  up strong research program
- Elizabeth: it would set precedent; CITA has similar exemption - issue is
partly policy and partly funding related. But can look at it again. SAP
  envelope is restricted.
- Charles: this has worked well in USA (BNL, etc). We should re-examine NSERC
rules. Lab does it with DOE funds.
- Jens: should we establish a task force? Are universities interested?
  University partners are needed.
- Jean: NSERC's conflict of interest?
- How much does it cost? 1/2 Assoc Pos. CITA puts money in postdocs but only
at Toronto. CINP request for postdocs was declined.
- Carl: these positions have huge traction with administrators.

4. NSERC Conflict of Interest Rules
- Carl: experience in SAPES was frustrating at times when one was excluded for
some arcane reason and not actual conflict of interest.
- Elizabeth: we have been a bit too rigid in our implementation of conflict of
  interests. Will review.

5. Lobbying for more NSERC Discovery grant funds
- Queens astrophysics CFREF
- Reiner: think about what is a feasible approach for the future.
- Elizabeth: how do you see yourselves as a community fitting in to Canadian
  impact areas/priorities.
- Kumar: fundamental science is a hard sell to our administration. University
has given CFI support. Basic research is not in their Stat Plan.
- Gerald: VP and Dean at TRIUMF Board meetings makes a positive impact.
- Garth: in addition to your briefs send such comments to Garth. Make sure
positive messages make it in the final document which can be used with
  administrators.
